Ashby's Mill, Tower windmill in Brixton, London, England
Ashby's Mill is a four-story brick tower mill in Brixton built to grind grain using wind power. The structure features a distinctive boat-shaped cap with sails and stands approximately 49 feet tall (15 meters).
The mill was built in 1816 and initially ground grain using wind power until the 1860s. Later it switched to steam and gas engines to produce flour for local businesses and West End hotels.
The site hosts community events and educational activities run by volunteer groups throughout the year. Visitors can see how the building serves as a gathering place for people interested in local heritage.
The mill is open for visits on selected weekends during warmer months, and advance booking is required. The building is accessible by public transport and located within walking distance of Brixton's main roads.
Operations moved to a water-powered site on the River Wandle in 1862, yet the original structure remained as a landmark. This transition shows how Brixton adapted its industrial processes to new energy sources.
