Bear Inn, Medieval pub and inn in Cowbridge, Wales.
The Bear Inn is a stone building with two bars on each side of the entrance corridor and features traditional fireplaces with carved stone lintels. The interior preserves the character of a medieval inn with visible structural elements from different periods.
The building originated in the 12th century as a lateral chimney hall-house and later transformed into a multi-storey structure. It subsequently served as a gathering place for county officials and played a role in local governance.
The pub displays ceiling beams from the 16th century and contains two historical shields in the hall fireplace, including one with a reversed lion. These symbols reflect the building's role in the life of local officials.
The establishment is open daily and serves meals during set times in midday and evening hours with a selection of main courses and snacks. Three different varieties of real ale are available on rotation, changing regularly.
The building was the only location in the area during the 18th century where travelers could change their horses. This function made it an essential stop along the travel routes of that era.
