Broadcasting Tower, University tower in Leeds, United Kingdom
Broadcasting Tower is a 23-story residential building in Leeds defined by its rust-colored steel mesh exterior. The structure combines 240 student apartments with faculty spaces and academic facilities in a mixed-use design.
Construction began in 2008 and completed in 2009 through a partnership between developer Downing and Leeds Metropolitan University. The finished building quickly became a landmark that has shaped the city's skyline since its opening.
The building functions as both a living space and an academic hub for the university community. Students find lecture halls, study areas, and faculty departments within the same structure, creating a close connection between residential and educational life.
The tower sits on Woodhouse Lane and is easily reached by public transport from central Leeds. Visitor access to certain areas is available, allowing people to see the student facilities and architectural features up close.
In 2010, the building won the award for Best Tall Building in the World from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. This international recognition acknowledged the innovative design and how it balanced form with practical function.
