Broadstone Castle and Barony, Medieval castle ruins in North Ayrshire, Scotland
Broadstone Castle consists of stone ruins sitting on Broadstone Crags, with former gardens and an established tree-lined avenue framing the remains. The site spreads across a hillside offering views into the surrounding North Ayrshire landscape.
The fortress stood intact until 1850, when its stones were quarried to build Broadstonehall Farm structures during a period of local change. This dismantling marked the end of the castle's physical presence in the landscape.
The site reflects the presence of the Shaw family and the Montgomeries, who shaped this corner of Ayrshire through their residence and influence. Their connection to the area remains visible through local records and nearby religious buildings.
The site is accessible via Sustrans National Route 7, which connects to the nearby towns of Beith and Barrmill. Visiting during daylight offers the best views of the ruins and the surrounding countryside.
Limestone quarries near the site led to extensive mining operations that created a dedicated Hillhead Railway connection to the Ayrshire main line. This industrial railway branch served the extraction industry for many years.
