Compton Place, English country house in Eastbourne, United Kingdom.
Compton Place is a country house in Eastbourne with a main residence, office buildings, and a stable courtyard arranged around a central paved yard. The grounds feature formal gardens with open lawns and wooded areas that extend across the property.
The estate started as Bourne Place in the 1500s and was later transformed when a prominent landowner commissioned a redesign from a noted architect. In the early 1800s, a major nobleman oversaw extensive changes that shaped how the house looks today.
The house reflects the tastes of different owners across time, with each generation leaving its mark on how the rooms and gardens were arranged. Walking through the spaces, you notice how ideas about style and comfort shifted from one era to the next.
The property sits on the western side of Eastbourne close to the coast and near the South Downs hills. Its position at the end of a valley makes it fairly easy to locate from either the beach or town center.
The gardens were shaped by several famous landscape designers, and one of them created detailed sketches of his ideas that still survive today. These drawings show designs that were never actually built at the time.
