Dunseverick Castle, Medieval fortress ruins in County Antrim, Northern Ireland

The remains of Dunseverick Castle stand on a basalt promontory along the Causeway Coast, with fragments of walls rising from rocky cliffs.

Originally built as a stone fort in the 5th century, Vikings attacked the structure in 870 AD before it became a stronghold for the Earls of Ulster.

Saint Patrick visited this ancient site to baptize Olcán, who subsequently transformed into an important religious figure as Bishop of Ireland.

The National Trust maintains these ruins, which visitors can access via the Causeway Cliff Path connecting Dunseverick Harbor to Giant's Causeway.

This castle marked the northern endpoint of the Slige Midluachra, one of five ancient royal roads that connected to Tara, the seat of Irish kings.
