Devizes Castle, Norman castle in Devizes, England
Devizes Castle is a fortification in Devizes, England, showing architectural features from different periods of its long development. The building displays stone mullioned windows, carved archways, oak flooring, and spiral staircases that connect multiple residential floors.
The original stronghold was built around 1080 and suffered a major fire in 1113, after which it was rebuilt in stone shortly after. In the 19th century, the building was redesigned in Victorian style by a Bath architect, giving it the appearance we see today.
The name comes from medieval times and refers to the location where three separate manors once met. You can still sense this historical significance when you walk through the grounds and see how the site sits at a crossroads of old boundaries.
The castle is located in the town of Devizes and easy to find once you know where to look. Plan enough time to explore both the exterior and interior, especially if you want to visit multiple floors and see all the details.
The castle once held high-ranking prisoners including the eldest son of William the Conqueror and an English king. This role as a prison for powerful captives shows how significant it was during medieval times.
