Forse Castle

Forse Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a rocky peninsula jutting into the sea along the Highland coast. The remains stand roughly 50 meters above the water and are surrounded by steep cliffs that form natural barriers.

The fortress was built around 1200 and remained under Sutherland family control for roughly 4 centuries as a regional stronghold. Eventually abandoned, it gradually crumbled into the ruins visible today.

The castle demonstrates the architectural methods of medieval Scottish builders, who incorporated local materials into defensive structures along the Highland coast.

Visiting requires careful footing due to steep cliffs and rough terrain across the peninsula. There are no facilities at the site, so wear sturdy shoes and dress for variable coastal weather.

A deep natural ditch at the peninsula's neck creates an additional defensive barrier between the castle and mainland. This shows how builders used the landscape itself as part of the fortification.
