Fort Blockhouse, Military fort in Gosport, England
Fort Blockhouse sits on the Haslar Peninsula with direct access to Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent waterways. The site is divided into four sections serving different purposes: military facilities, a submarine museum, sailing activities, and a boat yard.
The fort began in 1417 as a defensive tower and was rebuilt and strengthened over many centuries. It became a submarine base in 1905 and played an important role in British naval operations for decades.
The submarine museum housed here traces the story of British underwater naval operations and how sailors carried out their duties at sea. Visitors can see displays that show the role this work played in defending the nation.
The site spreads across different zones that you can walk through at your own pace. Start with the museum section to understand the history, then explore the other areas depending on your interests.
A training tank for submarine crews to practice emergency escape procedures still stands on the grounds. This rare structure shows how seriously the Navy took the dangers of underwater operations.
