Kingsgate Castle, Mock castle in Broadstairs, England
Kingsgate Castle is a mock castle in Broadstairs standing on cliffs that overlook Kingsgate Bay, with stone towers and crenellated walls facing the sea. The Grade II listed building now contains 31 private apartments within its castle-like structure.
Henry Fox started construction in 1760 as a stable block for his nearby Holland House estate, giving it a purely practical purpose. The building later became a private residence and eventually transformed into housing as coastal life changed over the following centuries.
The structure has shaped life in this coastal community since it changed from grand residence to housing, becoming a recognizable landmark for locals and visitors. Its purpose transformed from private use to shared living space over the generations.
The building is best viewed from the clifftop paths and beaches below, where you can see its full form against the sea. Since it is now private apartments, you cannot enter the interior, but the exterior and its clifftop setting are freely visible.
The name is said to link to King Charles II, who reportedly arrived at this spot in 1683 during a storm, lending the place a brush with royal history. This connection gives the location a story beyond its castle-like appearance and architectural purpose.
