Kilkerran Castle

Kilkerran Castle are the remains of a fortress on the coast of the Kintyre peninsula, with partial defensive walls and structures still visible from the 15th century. The ruins sit on elevated ground overlooking Campbeltown bay.

The fortress was built in the 1490s by royal order to limit local clan power. Over the following decades, it became a site of conflict during periods of regional tension and dispute.

This fortress represented local power and reflected the struggles that shaped life in the region. Visitors can still sense from the ruins how important control of the Kintyre peninsula was to the families who fought for it.

The ruins sit southeast of Campbeltown and are visible from the nearby road, though interior access is limited. Viewing conditions are better at high tide when the surrounding ground is drier.

The site witnessed dramatic power struggles, including a seizure in the 1530s when local leaders reclaimed control by force. This episode marked the end of royal authority at the location.
