Mapledurham Watermill, Historic watermill on River Thames in Mapledurham, United Kingdom.
Mapledurham Watermill is a working historic mill on the riverbank of the Thames in the village of Mapledurham, United Kingdom. The structure features two separate waterwheels and extends over multiple levels along the riverside with millstones and mechanical drive shafts inside.
The central part of this mill was built in the 15th century as a grain processing site on the river. Extensions from the 17th and 18th centuries expanded the complex with additional rooms and mechanisms for growing production.
The building shows traditional methods of grain processing and still produces flour using water-driven machinery installed across different centuries. Visitors watch the complete milling cycle from grain to finished product sold in the shop.
Guided visits let you observe the milling process and see the interior with rotating gears and millstones. Freshly ground flour can be purchased in the attached shop.
The building appeared on the cover of Black Sabbath's first album released in 1970. The shadowy riverside setting matched the musical direction of the band.
