Mar Lodge

Mar Lodge is a granite residence in Aberdeenshire that combines Highland and Tudor Revival architecture with extensive timber details throughout. The structure displays this architectural blend across its rooms and building framework.

The current lodge was built between 1895 and 1898, replacing earlier structures on the site. Queen Victoria laid its foundation stone in October 1895, marking a significant moment in the estate's development.

The lodge remains connected to Scottish Highland hunting traditions and the lifestyle of the estates that supported them. Visitors can observe how the rooms reflect this heritage through their design and furnishings.

The National Trust for Scotland manages the property as holiday apartments, offering accommodation within the historic building. The location near Braemar makes it accessible for visitors exploring the Highlands.

The Stag Ballroom contains an extensive collection of around 2,435 mounted deer heads on its walls and ceiling. This assembly reveals the hunting passion of the estate owners and their custom of displaying trophies.
