Old St Mary's, Walmer

Old St Mary's is a Norman church built with thick stone walls and rounded archways, with a lower chancel constructed primarily from flint materials. The structure displays the medieval building methods typical of its period, with the stone walls forming the core of its design.

The building was founded in 1101 and underwent significant changes in the early 19th century, including the construction and later removal of a north aisle. These alterations show how the church adapted to changing needs over the centuries.

The Duke of Wellington regularly attended services here during his role as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. His hatchment remains on the north wall as a reminder of his connection to this place.
