Reading Bridge, Road bridge in Reading, England
Reading Bridge crosses the River Thames and links central Reading on the south bank with Lower Caversham to the north. The structure features reinforced concrete arches with space for both vehicle traffic and pedestrians on separate pathways.
The bridge opened in 1923 as a replacement for a narrow footbridge that once connected the two sides. It held the record as the longest concrete arch span in the United Kingdom when first built.
The bridge joins two areas of town and allows daily interaction between people living on each side of the river. Residents treat this crossing as a natural part of their everyday movements.
Traffic across the bridge is heavy during the day, with marked pathways kept separate from the vehicle lanes. Visitors should expect a busy crossing with clear pedestrian areas throughout.
In recent years the original structure from 1923 has been reinforced with modern materials like lightweight concrete and carbon fiber applications. These updates have extended the bridge's life while keeping its historic appearance intact.
