Rowallan Castle

Rowallan Castle, Category A listed medieval castle in East Ayrshire, Scotland.

Rowallan Castle comprises two distinct structures: a restored medieval fortress from the 13th century and a Victorian building designed with Arts and Crafts principles. The two parts together create an unusual blend of different architectural periods.

The castle was founded in the medieval period and later became home to Elizabeth Mure, who married King Robert II of Scotland. The site underwent multiple rebuildings and expansions across centuries, reflecting its changing role and importance.

The southern entrance displays carved Royal Arms of Scotland and family shields, showing how Scottish nobility displayed their connections and status. These symbols reflect the building traditions and values of the era.

The site offers two separate accommodations with a combined capacity of 21 guests, located approximately 30 minutes from Glasgow and Prestwick Airport. The grounds are easily accessible and combine overnight stays with recreational facilities in a rural setting.

The grounds feature a championship golf course designed by Colin Montgomerie set within 600 acres of ancient Scottish woodland. This course represents a surprising modern addition that extends the appeal far beyond the historic structures.
