Barrowland Ballroom, Music venue in Glasgow, United Kingdom
The Barrowland Ballroom is a music hall in the Gallowgate district of Glasgow, Scotland. A large neon sign glows above the entrance and the interior consists of a wooden floor with a stage at one end.
The McIver family opened the hall in 1934 as a dance venue with room for hundreds of couples. After a fire in 1958 the building was rebuilt and evolved into a concert hall from the 1960s onward.
The hall takes its name from the Barras market next door and locals simply call it the Barrowland. Many Scottish bands consider a performance here a milestone in their career.
The hall holds about 1900 people and sits near Buchanan Street bus station and several subway stops. Most concerts take place in the evening and the audience stands on the floor during performances.
The floor is a sprung wooden construction originally built for dancers. During loud concerts the floor bounces under the feet of the audience and adds to the physical experience of the music.
