Baynard's Castle, Medieval castle in City of London, England

The castle stands at the junction of the River Fleet and Thames, incorporating sections of the ancient Roman walls into its northern fortification structure.

Built in 1017 by Ralph Baynard, the original fortress remained until 1213, when King John ordered its destruction during conflicts with baron Robert Fitzwalter.

The second castle served as a royal residence where Edward IV received his crown and Richard III accepted the throne of England.

The archaeological remains of Baynard's Castle lie beneath modern office buildings near Blackfriars station in central London.

The castle utilized Roman-era river walls from the 3rd century as foundation materials, demonstrating the continuous development of London's defensive structures.
