Philae obelisk, Ancient Egyptian obelisk in Kingston Lacy, England
The pink granite obelisk stands 22 feet tall in the gardens of Kingston Lacy estate, featuring detailed hieroglyphic inscriptions on its surface.
William John Bankes discovered this monument during his Egyptian expedition in 1815 and transported it to England, where it arrived in December 1821.
The bilingual inscriptions on the obelisk, containing both hieroglyphic and Greek text, contributed to the understanding of ancient Egyptian writing systems.
Visitors can examine the obelisk during regular opening hours of Kingston Lacy estate, with guided tours providing information about its historical significance.
The transportation process required nineteen horses to raise the obelisk into position, with assistance from the Duke of Wellington's gun carriage.
