Spade House, Grade II* listed residence in Sandgate, England.
Spade House is a coastal residence in Sandgate with rendered walls, buttresses, and extended rooflines. Its numerous mullioned windows and horizontal proportions create an elegant profile overlooking the shoreline.
Architect C.F.A. Voysey designed and built the house between 1899 and 1903 as a seaside home for the writer. The building was created according to the modern design principles of that time.
The house still carries the mark of the famous author who lived and worked here. Visitors can see the blue plaque that commemorates his time at this location.
The building now operates as a nursing home and is not open to casual visitors. You can view the exterior and the blue plaque from the street.
The original heart-shaped door ornament, a signature of the architect, was replaced with a spade symbol at the resident's request. This change reflected his personal mark on the design.
