St John and St Mary Magdalene Church, Goldthorpe, Grade II listed church in Goldthorpe, England
St John and St Mary Magdalene Church is a church building in Goldthorpe featuring reinforced concrete construction with Italian architectural details and a bell tower displaying four clock faces. The interior furnishings were also built with modern materials, creating an unusual appearance for a religious space.
The church opened in 1916 as a vision by Viscount Halifax and architect Alfred Young Nutt in response to local needs. It came at a time when reinforced concrete was a novel choice for religious buildings.
A stained glass window added in 2006 honors the mining heritage of the surrounding area and the workers who shaped the local community. This recognition brings industrial history directly into the sacred space where people gather.
The church sits on Lockwood Road and opens to visitors during daylight hours, with regular services held on Sundays. Plan your visit during daytime to fully appreciate the architectural details and the interior space.
This building belongs to a rare group of early large churches in England built entirely from reinforced concrete, including all interior elements. This construction choice was groundbreaking at the time and uncommon for places of worship.
