St Peter's Church, Eaton Square, London, Anglican church in Belgravia, London, England
St Peter's Church is an Anglican church on the north side of Eaton Square in the Belgravia district of London. The Georgian façade with its Ionic columns and clock tower faces the square, while the interior behind it was completely rebuilt after a fire.
The church was built in 1827 as part of a government programme that funded new places of worship in growing parts of London after the Napoleonic Wars. An arson attack in 1987 gutted the interior and led to a full reconstruction that was completed in the 1990s.
St Peter's draws a mixed congregation of local residents, working professionals, and visitors from across London. Services follow the Anglican tradition, but the interior's contemporary feel gives the space a noticeably open and forward-looking character.
The church sits directly on Eaton Square and is easy to reach on foot from several nearby stations. It is worth checking ahead, as the building may not always be open outside of scheduled services.
The exterior is protected as a Grade II* listed building, meaning the Georgian façade must be kept exactly as it was, while the interior it encloses dates from the 1990s. This makes the building an unusual case where the shell and the inside belong to entirely different eras.
