Box Farm Meadows SSSI, Protected meadows in Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
Box Farm Meadows is a protected reserve covering approximately 8 hectares located south of Box village near Nailsworth in Gloucestershire. The site comprises two adjoining meadows managed to support a diverse range of wildflowers and plant species.
The Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust acquired the site in 1978 as a memorial to F.S. Fawkes with support from conservation organizations. The land bears traces of earlier quarrying activity that provided stone for construction in the surrounding region.
The land contains former mine workings that produced high-quality freestone, which was extensively used for construction throughout the Stroud region.
The meadows are managed through grazing and cutting to maintain their ecological health. As a protected site, it welcomes visitors but requests that people stay on designated paths to avoid disturbing the plant communities.
The reserve is home to one of the largest populations of Meadow Clary in the United Kingdom, displaying brilliant blue flowers from June through July. This rare wildflower attracts numerous insects and creates a striking natural display during the warmer months.
