St Matthew's Church, Wigan

St Matthew's Church is a Gothic Revival building in Pemberton featuring five sections in the main hall, side wings, and a central tower with a spire. It is built from pink sandstone and topped with red tile roofing.

Construction began in 1892 under architects Sharpe, Paley and Austin, with Colonel Henry Blundell funding the project as a memorial to his deceased wife Beatrice. The building took several years to reach its current form.

Inside, you can see stained glass windows created by Harold Harvey during the late 1970s and 1980s, mixed with earlier pieces from Hardmans studio. These windows shape how light fills the church and reflect different periods of artistic work.

The church serves as an active place of worship for the Church of England under the Diocese of Liverpool. It is best to check service times before visiting to ensure you can enter the building.
