Bragg's Mill

Bragg's Mill is a wooden post mill in Ashdon with four patent sails of mixed design, rising to about 34 feet. The building contains original milling machinery including stones and transmission parts that show how grain was processed.

The building was constructed in 1757 and operated as a grain mill with two pairs of millstones until 1912. Its design with adjustable sails allowed it to harness wind power effectively over many decades.

The mill represents a connection to how people once processed grain in this rural community. Visitors can observe the workspace and understand the daily labor that sustained local life for generations.

The mill opens on select days each month and allows visitors to explore the interior spaces and machinery. Watch for uneven floors and narrow stairs while discovering the mechanical systems inside.

The main head wheel was modified from its original compass arm design to a clasp arm configuration. This mechanical upgrade improved control and reliability of the rotational movement throughout the mill's working life.
