Sts Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Streatham Hill, Roman Catholic church in Streatham Hill, England
Sts Simon and Jude is a Roman Catholic church in Streatham Hill featuring architectural elements including sandstone construction, a tabernacle pillar, and a carved pulpit base. The interior displays hand-carved angels and a cross brought from Poland that shape its visual character.
The church was established in 1904 when Frances Elizabeth Ellis and her sister purchased the land from the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Company. This acquisition made it possible to create a Roman Catholic community at this location.
The church displays several stained glass windows, with a central window showing Divine Mercy created by Susan Ashworth for the 100th anniversary in 2004. These windows shape how light enters the interior and create a distinctive mood during services.
Visiting requires flexibility with scheduling since services occur at different times throughout the week and access may vary depending on the day. It helps to check ahead for current visiting hours and any potential restrictions.
The church sits on the site of a former cattle pond and an underground stream continues to flow beneath the building, leading to ongoing repairs and reinforcement work. These geological challenges have shaped the structure's maintenance over time.
