Durham University Observatory, Astronomical observatory at Potters Bank, Durham, England.

Durham University Observatory is an astronomical facility in the city of Durham with four roof-mounted telescopes on the Physics building. These instruments are positioned to observe different parts of the sky for research and educational purposes.

The facility was established in 1840 and holds Grade II listed status from that era. Early astronomers contributed to laying the foundations for its scientific work and development.

Students come here to learn practical astronomy by using real telescopes and conducting their own observations. The hands-on work gives them direct experience with how astronomical research actually happens.

This facility is primarily used for university research and teaching purposes, so access may be limited. It is best to check opening times and access requirements before planning a visit.

Over the decades, the observatory has collected more than one million images using CCD cameras. This extensive record documents numerous celestial objects and shows how much observation work has accumulated over time.
