Dylan Thomas Trail, Literary heritage trail in Ceredigion, Wales.
The Dylan Thomas Trail is a walking route in Ceredigion, Wales, running from Llanon to New Quay through farmland, coastal paths, and small villages. Information boards placed along the way mark specific locations connected to the Welsh poet's life and writing.
The trail was created in 2003 to mark the years Thomas spent living and writing in this part of Wales during World War II. Some of his most important work, including early drafts connected to Under Milk Wood, took shape during that stay.
The trail passes through New Quay and other villages that Thomas described directly in his writing, making it easy to connect real places to lines from his poems. Walking the route feels like reading his work in reverse, with the landscape providing the words.
Sturdy footwear and waterproof layers are worth bringing, as the route crosses open fields and exposed coastal sections where the weather can shift without warning. A printed guide or map helps on some stretches where the markers are less obvious.
Near New Quay, an old cemetery that sits partly below the waterline is said to have given Thomas the idea for a key scene in Under Milk Wood. At low tide, remnants of the site can still be seen from the coastal path.
