The Questors Theatre, Amateur theatre in Ealing, United Kingdom
The Questors Theatre is an amateur theatre in Ealing, west London, with two performance spaces under one roof. The larger of the two, the Judi Dench Playhouse, holds around 350 seats, while the studio theatre fits around 90, allowing different productions to run alongside each other.
The company was founded in 1929 by a group of 17 amateur actors and moved into its purpose-built home in 1964, when the building was opened by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. That move gave the company the space to stage more ambitious productions.
The Questors Theatre is one of the largest amateur theatre companies in Europe and runs a drama school alongside its productions. Visitors attending a show often find themselves watching performers who trained on the same stage where they now perform.
The theatre is about an 8-minute walk from Ealing Broadway station, so it is easy to reach by tube or overground train. A cafe in the upper foyer and a bar on the ground floor are open around show times if you want something to eat or drink.
The building contains one of Britain's first thrust stages, where the stage juts out into the audience on three sides rather than facing them from the front. This design was rare for any theatre in 1964, let alone one run entirely by amateurs.
