Jacob's Well, Bristol, Medieval mikveh in Cliftonwood, Bristol, England
The stone structure of Jacob's Well encloses a natural spring with a lintel containing Hebrew inscriptions at Constitution Hill junction.
Built during the 12th century, this ritual bath served Bristol's Jewish community until their expulsion in 1290 under King Edward I's decree.
The bath maintained specific water temperatures of 12°C, meeting requirements for Jewish purification rituals and body preparation before burial ceremonies.
Located one mile from Bristol's former Jewish quarter, the structure remained active until the 19th century, supplying water to Bristol Cathedral.
The stone chamber contains the oldest medieval Hebrew inscription discovered in Bristol, dating to approximately year 1100.
