Totnes Guildhall, Tudor town hall in Totnes, England
Totnes Guildhall is a Tudor-era town hall featuring traditional stone architecture with ornate woodwork across multiple floors. The building contains a council chamber, former prison cells, and several exhibition spaces displaying historical material.
This building was constructed in 1553 on a former priory site and served as a magistrates' court and gathering place for over four centuries. It was designated Grade I listed due to its architectural and historical importance.
The Lower Hall displays golden boards listing over 600 mayors who have served Totnes since 1359. These boards reflect the town's deep tradition of civic leadership.
The building is open for visits Monday through Friday during the April to October season, allowing access to historic rooms and displays. Visitors should plan their trip accordingly since operating hours are limited by season.
The council chamber holds the original table where English Civil War leader Oliver Cromwell held meetings in 1646. This piece of furniture provides a direct link to a pivotal moment in English political history.
