Melbourne Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Melbourne, Derbyshire, England.
Melbourne Castle is a ruined medieval fortification in Derbyshire with stone wall sections still standing that show the original layout of the structure. The remains give a sense of how this defensive building once dominated the local landscape.
Construction of this fortress began in the early 14th century but was never fully completed, and the structure later fell into ruin. Political upheaval of the time shaped the fate of this medieval site.
John I, Duke of Bourbon, spent 19 years imprisoned here following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.
This site is a protected heritage monument with restricted public access, so visitors need to check in advance whether access is available. Planning ahead helps ensure a successful visit to the archaeological remains.
Underground chambers of superior craftsmanship were discovered during 19th-century excavations beneath Castle Farm gardens.
