Municipal Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, Municipal borough on the southern coast of England.
The Municipal Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis is an administrative union of two coastal towns on the Dorset shore. The towns sit on opposite sides of a bay and together formed a significant port area with distinct urban layouts.
The two towns were formally united by royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1571. This merger gave them combined parliamentary representation and coastal trade importance for centuries afterward.
The two towns kept their separate local identities while operating under joint governance. This dual structure shaped how residents organized their communities and civic life together.
Visitors can walk along the bay and explore both town centers, each with its own distinct character and streets. The seafront promenade connects the two areas well and provides good vantage points for viewing the coast.
This area once held enough political power to send four Members of Parliament to Westminster, an unusually large delegation for its size. That influence shrank significantly in 1832 when electoral reforms reduced the representation to just two.
