Pont y Werin, Pedestrian bridge in Cardiff Bay, United Kingdom.
Pont y Werin is a 140-meter steel footbridge spanning the River Ely, connecting Cardiff International Sports Village with Penarth. A 20-meter lifting section in the middle can raise to allow river vessels to pass through.
Construction began in 2009 using one of Britain's largest cranes to position heavy steel sections into place. The bridge was built as part of transforming the former industrial harbor into a modern recreational area.
The bridge displays portrait benches with steel sculptures of local sports figures, including Paralympics champion Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and cyclist Nicole Cooke. These installations tell the stories of people who shaped the city.
The walkway is wide and comfortable for both pedestrians and cyclists moving between the two areas. Visit during daylight to fully appreciate the steel structure and the art installations along the path.
The bridge completes a circular route around Cardiff Bay that lets visitors walk the entire harbor perimeter through revitalized areas. The route itself traces the transformation from working docks to modern leisure spaces.
