West Park is a large public park in Wolverhampton, England, featuring curved paths, flower beds, a boating lake, and a Victorian glasshouse. The northern end opens onto the lake, which has small islands in the middle, while the center of the park is organized around circular paths and planted beds.
The park opened in 1881 on land that had previously been used as a horse racing ground, as part of a wider effort by the town to create public green space. Over the following decades it hosted major events, including a large arts and industry exhibition in 1902, and was used for growing food during both world wars.
The cast-iron bandstand at the heart of the park was donated by a local politician and has been restored for use during outdoor concerts. On warm days, families and walkers gather around it to listen to live music.
The park has multiple entrances and its paths are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, making it easy to get around whatever your needs. During summer months some areas may be used for events, so it is worth checking ahead if you plan to visit a specific part.
The park served as the start and finish area for the cycling time trials at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, with spectators lining the nearby streets to watch. The Victorian glasshouse is no longer open to visitors but still stands in the park and can be seen from the paths.
