Zetland, Maritime rescue boat museum in Redcar, England
Zetland is a rescue boat displayed in a museum building along the seafront in Redcar and was built to save lives along the English coast. The vessel itself is relatively small and was operated by hand power and sails to pull people from the water.
The boat was built in 1802 and is the oldest rescue vessel of its kind still in existence. It was used for many decades to save people before eventually being preserved as a monument.
The boat represents a tradition of coastal rescue in England and shows how local people used their skills to help those in danger at sea. The way it is presented tells the story of a time when such rescues required practical expertise and personal courage.
The museum is easily accessible located right along the harbor and can be visited during the warmer months. Entry is free and the building is small enough to explore quickly.
The community fought in 1864 to preserve the old boat instead of replacing it with newer models. This commitment shows how important the vessel was to local history.
