Zetland, Maritime rescue boat museum in Redcar, England
The Zetland rescue boat rests in a dedicated museum building along the Esplanade, displaying maritime artifacts and historical rescue equipment from the 1800s.
Built by Henry Greathead in South Shields during 1802, the Zetland operated for 78 years and documented the rescue of more than 500 people from dangerous waters.
The Zetland represents the legacy of maritime rescue operations in Britain, with local fishermen manually operating the vessel through treacherous coastal conditions.
The museum opens from April through September, offering free admission to visitors who wish to examine the oldest existing lifeboat in the world.
Local residents prevented the dismantling of the Zetland in 1864 by negotiating with authorities to preserve it alongside newer rescue vessels.
