Wychbury Ring, Iron Age hillfort in Hagley, England
Wychbury Ring is an Iron Age hillfort in Hagley with two rampart systems and ditches arranged in an elliptical pattern. The inner and outer ramparts enclose a flat area where buildings from different periods once stood.
The fort was built during the Iron Age as a defensive structure and remained in use across several centuries. Later occupants adapted the existing defenses, leaving layered evidence of ongoing habitation.
The elevated position was chosen to monitor the surrounding land and control movement across the region. People lived here across centuries, leaving behind evidence of their daily routines and trades.
The fort is easily reached on foot from nearby paths and offers wide views across the surrounding land from its elevated position. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven throughout the site.
Archaeologists discovered bronze rings and terrets in 1884 on the site, showing that horse-drawn vehicles were used here regularly. These finds suggest a more prosperous population than typically expected for such locations.
