Scaleby Castle, Medieval castle in Scaleby, England.
Scaleby Castle is a medieval fortress in Cumbria with a four-story central tower and surrounding circular moat. The structure combines a great hall with defensive walls and functions today as a private residence for the baron's family.
Robert de Tilliol built the fortress in the early 1300s after receiving land from Edward I with construction approval from Edward II. The building endured two assaults from Parliamentary forces during the civil war period, who burned it in 1645 and again in 1648.
The castle displays a pele tower design that merges domestic living spaces with defensive capabilities. Visitors can observe how medieval landowners integrated protection and comfort into a single structure.
The grounds around the building are open to view from outside, but entry to the interior is not permitted as it remains a private home. Plan ahead before visiting, as the location is remote and access may be limited.
The fortress survived two separate siege attempts during the civil war conflict, though it was burned both times and required rebuilding. This makes it an uncommon example of how medieval pele towers were repaired and restored after destruction.
