Shirburn Castle, Medieval castle in Shirburn, England.
Shirburn Castle is a fortified stone structure built in a rectangular plan with rounded corner towers and three stories rising above the surrounding grounds. A substantial gate tower on the west side marks the main entrance to this quadrangular fortification.
This fortified residence was built in 1377 by architect Henry Yevele for a medieval landowner named Warin de Lisle. Major internal renovations took place after 1716 when the Parker family acquired and modernized the castle's interior spaces.
The castle once held an important library filled with rare printed books and scientific documents that made it a center of learning for centuries. This collection shaped how the place was understood and valued by its owners.
The property is privately owned and closed to visitors, as it remains under the control of the Macclesfield family interests. You can view it from a distance along public roads, but interior access is not permitted.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase with hand-carved wooden balusters that shows fine craftsmanship. The central entrance hall was originally an armory and was later converted into a formal room during later renovations.
