St. Mary's Church, Attenborough, Medieval parish church in Attenborough, England
St. Mary's Church is a stone structure constructed from around 1150 onward in Attenborough, incorporating elements from successive building campaigns. The building rises with a west tower reaching approximately 130 feet in height topped by a spire, containing an airy nave with upper windows, a medieval chancel, and adjoining vestry spaces.
A chapel occupied this location near the River Trent from 964 onward, before the present church began construction around 1150. Building continued across multiple centuries as the settlement expanded and the structure took its current form.
The church serves as a communal gathering space where residents meet for worship and community events throughout the year. It represents the spiritual center of the village and holds meaning for families who have marked important moments here across generations.
The church is accessible during worship services and special events, though weekday visiting hours may vary or be restricted. It helps to check ahead before planning a visit to learn when doors are open and what activities are scheduled.
The churchyard holds a memorial to 130 workers killed in the 1918 Chilwell shell filling factory explosion. This tribute marks one of the region's most devastating industrial accidents, whose impact extended far beyond the immediate area.
