The Lighthouse, Art museum and design centre in central Glasgow, Scotland.
Description
The Lighthouse is an Art Nouveau building in central Glasgow that once housed a newspaper and now functions as a museum and arts centre. The structure contains multiple gallery spaces, exhibition areas, and a tower with views over the city.
History
The building was designed in 1895 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh as his first major architectural commission for the Glasgow Herald newspaper. This project launched his career as one of Scotland's most influential architects.
Culture
Visitors experience it as a working exhibition space where contemporary Scottish design and architecture take center stage in rotating shows. The building itself demonstrates how a historic structure can continue serving the creative community it was originally designed to house.
Practical
The museum is centrally located in Glasgow and easy to reach on foot from nearby streets. Allow time to climb the tower stairs and explore the multiple levels of gallery spaces spread throughout the building.
Did you know?
The building features a helical staircase leading to Mackintosh's original tower, creating a distinctive climbing experience through the historic structure. A separate modern viewing platform provides an additional vantage point, blending the old design with contemporary viewing spaces.
