Llancaiach Fawr

Llancaiach Fawr is a fortified manor house in Gelligaer built in the 16th century, featuring thick stone walls, intricate timber framing, and a grand staircase spanning three floors. The building preserves medieval architectural elements that show how homes were constructed during that period.

The manor was built in 1540 and served as a residence for Colonel Edward Prichard. In 1645, King Charles I visited the house, marking a significant moment in its history.

The manor operates as a living history museum where staff members in period costumes demonstrate daily activities from the 17th century. Visitors can watch how cooking, crafts, and household tasks were performed in that era.

The manor offers guided tours in Welsh and English, with dedicated parking for visitors. Wheelchair users and people with mobility needs will find accessible facilities throughout the site.

The grounds surrounding the manor extend across about 20 acres, offering a large natural space to explore. During autumn months, special tours explore reported paranormal events and unusual occurrences on the property.
