Kingerby Castle, Medieval fortification site in Market Rasen, England
Kingerby Castle is a former fortification site near Market Rasen, now occupied by an 1812 manor house listed as Grade II. The brick-built residence and its surrounding grounds form part of the rural landscape in this area of Lincolnshire.
The original motte and bailey castle was destroyed in 1216 during the First Barons' War when King John ordered its burning. The ruins persisted for centuries before the current manor house was built in the early 1800s.
The site shows how a military location transformed into a residence over time. This shift reflects how English building practices and social needs evolved across the centuries.
The location is accessible by country roads from Market Rasen, with local exploration starting from John Street Car Park. Being situated in rural terrain, having a car is helpful for visiting and exploring the wider area around the site.
The grounds contain earthwork remains of an ecclesiastical enclosure that once housed Elsham Priory. These hidden archaeological layers make the site one where multiple historical periods are layered beneath the surface and landscape.
