Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Birkenhead, Gothic Revival Catholic church in Birkenhead, England.
The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is a Catholic church built in Gothic Revival style with stone facades. The west end features paired entrances, tall lancet windows, and a large rose window positioned above the main portal.
Construction began in 1860 under architect E.W. Pugin in the Gothic Revival style. The chancel was added later between 1876 and 1877 by the firm Pugin and Pugin, which expanded the building.
The interior displays granite columns supporting tall pointed arches that draw the eye upward throughout the space. The 1895 reredos with its niches and saint statues shapes the appearance of the altar area in a distinctive way.
Access is through the paired entrances on the west side, and the church is typically open during service times. Visitors should note that this is an active place of worship where respectful behavior is expected.
The church once served as the pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Shrewsbury as the main cathedral for the area. This important role ended when a new cathedral was completed elsewhere.
