Bournemouth War Memorial, War memorial in central gardens, Bournemouth, England
The Bournemouth War Memorial is a white stone monument in the town's central gardens featuring two lion sculptures on elevated steps. One lion is depicted sleeping while the other roars, and the whole structure is surrounded by a balustrade.
The memorial was built in 1921 and designed by deputy architect Albert Edward Shervey. It was created to commemorate local residents who died during World War I.
The memorial serves as a gathering place where visitors and residents come together during Remembrance Day to honor those who died in service. On these occasions, people from across the town lay flowers and observe moments of silence in front of the monument.
The memorial stands in the central gardens opposite Bournemouth Town Hall, close to St Andrew's Church. You can reach it easily by following the pathways through the gardens.
The two lion sculptures on the memorial are replicas of works by Italian artist Antonio Canova. These lions originally came from Canova's famous tomb sculpture for Pope Clement XIII in St Peter's Basilica in Rome.
