Parish Church of Saint Michael, Medieval church in Aylsham, England.
The Parish Church of Saint Michael is a medieval church located at the northwest corner of the Market Place, distinguished by a prominent 14th-century tower. The structure features Victorian stained glass windows and an ornate rood screen adorned with 15th-century carved panels.
Construction of the church began in 1350 following medieval building practices that would continue through generations. In 1488, Richard Howard, the Sheriff of Norwich, added a double-story porch that became a defining feature of the entrance.
The rood screen displays 16 carved wooden panels from the 15th century that illustrate biblical scenes with fine detail. These works demonstrate how medieval craftsmen created religious instruction and decoration in the space where worshippers gathered.
The church is open to the public and offers a calm space to explore its medieval and Victorian features at your own pace. Note that active services and events may affect access, so it is worth checking beforehand.
Humphry Repton, the renowned landscape designer, is buried in the churchyard with a memorial placed outside the chancel door. This burial spot honors one of England's most influential designers whose work shaped gardens and grounds across the nation.
