Knightsland Farm House, 16th-century farmhouse in South Mimms, England
Description
Knightsland Farm House is a 16th-century timber-framed farmhouse in South Mimms with two stories and an attic space. The building features three windows on its main front with brick casing and is characterized by a through passage with a panelled screen that leads into the hall.
History
The house was built in the 16th century and substantially rebuilt around 1600, with its exterior refaced in the late 17th century. Later additions expanded the building as the needs of the household changed over generations.
Culture
The wall paintings on the first floor depict four scenes from the Prodigal Son story, created between 1590 and 1610 with floral friezes in brocade patterns. These artworks show the religious beliefs and artistic skill of the people who lived here during that era.
Practical
The building can be viewed from the exterior and displays its timber-framed structure and roof gables clearly. Visitors should note the separate gabled roof on the rear turret section, which distinguishes it from the main structure.
Did you know?
At the rear of the house stands a full-height square stair turret with its own gabled roof, giving the building an unusual asymmetrical form. This architectural feature was a practical solution for accessing upper floors in larger farmhouses of that period.
