Cullen, St Mary's Collegiate Church

St Mary's Collegiate Church in Cullen is a rectangular stone building with a cruciform layout that developed across several building periods. The choir extends eastward, one transept was added to the side, and another section was constructed to the north, creating a larger structure than the original medieval foundation.

This church was founded before 1236 and gained collegiate status in 1543 when the choir was enlarged. The expansion allowed for additional altars and clergy positions, making it a significant religious center for the region.

The church reflects different periods of religious use and decoration visible to visitors walking through its spaces. Changes made over time show how worship practices evolved within these walls.

The church sits southwest of central Cullen and can be reached by minor roads that lead to parking. A paved lane connects the parking area to the building, making it straightforward to find and approach.

The choir contains an ornate tomb from 1554 featuring a canopied recess where a stone effigy rests beneath decorative Gothic carvings. This funerary art represents one of the finest examples of its kind preserved in the area.
