Plas Taliaris, Grade I listed mansion in Manordeilo and Salem, Wales.
Description
Plas Taliaris is a three-story Georgian mansion built with Bath stone ashlar, featuring a central porch with Doric columns and symmetrical five-window fronts. The building includes a basement level and displays classical proportions throughout its design and structure.
History
The mansion first appears in records from 1336 and remained with the Gwynne family for centuries. Lord Robert Seymour purchased the estate in 1787 following significant renovation work.
Culture
The interior features wooden paneling and ornamental plaster ceilings with classical scenes that decorate the entrance hall. These details reveal how prosperous families showcased their wealth and taste through careful interior design in the early 18th century.
Practical
The building is accessed via a central flight of steps and contains multiple levels including a basement. Visitors should be prepared for stairs connecting the different floors as you move through the house.
Did you know?
The mansion retains an original Jacobean staircase with elaborate carvings that extends all the way to the attic. This staircase is a rare survival from the 17th century that was preserved even as the building was redesigned in later periods.
