Church of the Holy Cross, Medieval sailor's chapel in Mwnt, Wales.
The Church of the Holy Cross is a medieval building with whitewashed stone walls, deep-set windows, and a slate roof located near sandy beaches at Cardigan Bay. Its interior contains a baptismal font made from Preseli stone and remains of a carved wooden screen from the 15th century.
The original church site dates from the Age of Saints around 410-700 AD, while the current structure was built during the 14th century. This continuity shows how a sacred location was rebuilt and preserved across many centuries.
The church is named for the Holy Cross and serves visitors today as a place of worship and reflection. Its interior preserves details such as a baptismal font and carved wooden fragments that speak to its long history and the devotion of those who built and maintained it.
The building is accessible during daylight hours and focuses on regular services in summer months plus special ceremonies throughout the year. There is no parking directly at the site, so visitors should plan to walk from a distance.
A blocked window on the north wall allowed medieval lepers to observe religious ceremonies from outside the building. This detail preserves a compassionate practice from a time when such people needed to be separated from the community.
